I for one won’t be watching not one bit of this years’ Summer Olympics. I don’t buy for a moment that somehow the Olympics will enlighten one of the most oppresive regimes in the world. And finally the mainstream media is also speaking out (a bit late, 3 days before the thing begins, but all the same…).

It’s frankly sickening that in their desperate race for the Chinese market, all these western companies are falling over themselves throwing away everything that people died for in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and all the little places and small wars in between. The new enemy is Islam, and Communism is just this funny little system that’s not really so harmful, so let’s do business there and make bucketloads of cash.

To me, Communism should be a religious ideology – something to keep and hold dear, but not something practical to implement. Something that should guide one’s decisions, but not something to try to bring about politically. Even the supposed Communists in China are abondoning wholesale any real Communist thinking, because Communism doesn’t work in the real world – only money works in the real world, and the Chinese ruling class have learnt that lesson well – let the people be free to make money, and they don’t really give a toss who is in charge. Just stamp hard on any loud dissidents, and most people are happy to keep schtum and get one with their lives.

But that doesn’t mean that the Olympics should be in China – from the goon-protected Torch procession, to the draconian measures to clean up Beijing, this Olympics has been one farce after another, and I for one have better things to do than watch farces on TV.
